Professor Tara Moore is an invited speaker at Women into STEM, NI Science Festival, Belfast Metropolitan College, Titanic Quarter Campus, February 25th, 2016.
Belfast Metropolitan College is hosting a ‘STEM in Action’ event on Thursday 25th February in its Titanic Quarter Campus. This event will be included in the NI Science Festival programme.
Belfast Met is committed to working collaboratively with post-primary schools in Greater Belfast and the surrounding areas in promoting the STEM agenda in line with the Entitlement Framework. This ‘STEM in Action’ event is targeted solely to year 12 and 13 females and will enable them to take part in tailored, interactive workshops from a number of STEM areas including gaming, app development, applied science and renewable energies.
The event aims to welcome 130 year 12 and 13 females from the greater Belfast area. Following the STEM workshops, the pupils will have lunch and hear from two female STEM champions, Riona Fitzpatrick (Director Global & UK Sales Apps for BT) and Tara Moore (Ulster University)
The event will introduce pupils to the STEM areas via the workshops, enabling them to gather information about careers, professional development and progression routes. These workshops will broaden knowledge and understanding of STEM skills and available career paths and promote the importance of STEM as a driver for economic growth.
The ‘Have a Go’ workshops will cover three key STEM curriculum areas including ICT, Science and Engineering. Specific workshops include:
- Applied Science: Chemistry, Biology and Physics: This workshop will aim to answer scientific questions such as ‘What’s in your lipstick?’ and ‘What’s in our food?
- Mobile App Creation: Students will learn how to develop their ideas into mobile apps.
- Engineering and Renewables: This workshop will cover aeronautical engineering and the theory of flight. In addition to this students will look at renewables energies and have the chance to use ‘ Autocad’ ; a computer-aided drafting software used for architecture and construction.
