Ulster University is giving graduates with life sciences and healthcare related degrees the opportunity to specialise in a rapidly growing, high demand healthcare role for the first time in Northern Ireland.
Building on its global reputation for life and health sciences excellence, Ulster University has created Northern Ireland’s first ever Physician Associate postgraduate diploma course. This two-year full time programme of study will provide intensive evidence-based medical teaching coupled with hands-on workplace training.
Physician associates work under the supervision of doctors and alongside other healthcare professionals. They deliver care to patients in a variety of environments, including hospitals, GP practices and community health services to diagnose and manage of a well-defined set of conditions, and reduce pressure on other medical staff.
The new course will fully equip students with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to support doctors in the diagnosis and management of patient care. It will be delivered in partnership with multiple Health and Social Care (HSC) Trusts across Northern Ireland. Places are limited to 20 for the incoming academic year, starting in January 2017.
The Department of Health, Social Services & Public Safety are sponsoring the GP placements during this programme of study. Ulster University have also been successful in securing sponsorship to cover student fees for students who successfully progress to year 2 of the programme. Year 2 student fees will be paid in some of the HSC Trust placements within Northern Ireland as sponsorship subject to students taking up employment in that specific HSC Trust upon completion of the programme and the PA National Examination.
Closing date for applications is 10th November 2016.
