The presentation given to us by Professor Tara Moore was very inspirational. With the usual stigma and stereotype of women not being able to have a successful and happy family life, whilst still accomplishing wonders at a profession as demanding as Prof. Moore’s seems to be, it was really refreshing to see that both are simultaneously possible. Prof. Moore encouraged us to believe in ourselves and in whichever dream we have without passing off our path to get there as ‘ too difficult ‘ or ‘ impossible ‘. In the end, I found the entire STEM trip rather fun and interesting, it was also good to know that each of the STEM paths connects in some ways and that we may find ourselves in one by a rather nice coincidence.

Thursday morning. A beautiful morning with a promise of excitement and something unusual. That is how I and all the girls from the year 11 and 12 Double Award Science classes felt on our way to the Women into STEM event in Belfast Met.
We had a wonderful day full of various experiments and presentations from extraordinary women working within the STEM industries. The experiments included creating bright yellow nylon strings, extracting DNA from strawberries and even finding out what is in our lipsticks.
Professor Tara Moore from the Biomedical Science Research Institute at Ulster University talked us through her life and career and how her job helps with the treatment of blindness. She is a very inspirational lady. The trip was an amazing experience.
